Spiritual Dimension of RenewalIn his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Dr Stephen R. Covey discusses the importance of Spiritual renewal; taking time to nurture our inner self and relax and commune with our own core values – sometimes alone, sometimes involving others – it varies from one person to the next.

In this article I want to share my own techniques for renewing my spiritual self, and how to keep it calm.

When I Was A Lad; Spiritual Renewal Before I Understood What It Was

Growing up I lived two miles from the ocean; there were two ways to get to the ocean from my house – down The Avenue, or through The Dene.  The Avenue was, as the name implies, just a tree-lined road, actually the driveway to a British Stately Home.  The two mile walk was broken just over half way by the stately Delaval Hall, just before the road dropped and revealed a beautiful vie wof the ocean.

The Dene involved a mile walk from my village to the next village, and then another mile or so through the Dene itself; a (usually) very tranquil wooded area that follows a small stream running right down to the sea.

Whichever walk I took, they both ended at the ocean, where we had a few miles of clean sandy beaches and low sand dunes – where I would spend many hours sat watching the sun set over the ocean, the freight ships going by, and the waves lapping up on the shore.  It was so peaceful and rejuvinating to sit there alone and just soak up the environment I was sat in.

A World Apart, I Grew Up – But The Effect Is The Same

That was back in England, before I had too many cares in the world, but even now, just the memory of being there has a calming effect.  Just close my eyes and remember the view, feel the sea breeze on my face, recall that distinct smell from the salt water sea.

Now that I live right in the middle of Michigan, a couple of hours from any of the Great Lakes, and no where near a real ocean, I find my rejuvination in other ways – walking the country parks, sometimes just getting out to drive alone, reading one of the Classics, or immersing myself in a drawing project for a couple of hours.

How Do You find Spiritual Renewal

For some people, spending time in prayer or meditation, or giving service to others that you are able to help, may bring spiritual renewal.  It really does vary from person to person, andchances are you already know what works for you, even if you don’t know you know it.

Think of what you do that brings an inner sense of calm into your life; causes those moments where your worries melt away and you feel at peace.

What is it you do to renew your spirit?

What Happens To A Saw Blade That Is Constantly Used And Never Given a Rest?

Ever tried sawing through a tres non-stop?  The saw blade overheats, burns out, and the teeth shatter… your spiritual health will do just that too if you don’t take proper care and let it cool down from time-to-time.
